ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TOM SAVINI
Tom Savini's interest in make-up was initiated by the film MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES, which starred James Cagney as the legendary Lon Chaney... With this inspiration at the young age of twelve, Tom could be found in the bathroom "doing grotesque things" to his face while the other kids were outside playing football. It was this fascination with the magic of movie-making which helped launch his own motion picture career in the early 1970's after numerous appearances on stage and a tour of duty as a combat photographer in Vietnam. He handled the make-up for such films as DEATHDREAM and DERANGED before his association with Pittsburgh-based film-maker George Romero on MARTIN developed into a successful working relationship which has led to subsequent effects for DAWN OF THE DEAD and CREEPSHOW (a Stephen King/Romero collaboration). His screen credits also include EYES OF A STRANGER, THE BURNING, MANIAC, and THE PROWLER, and his graphic eftects for FRIDAY THE 13TH in 1980 turned the low-budget horror film into a box-office blockbuster which has since spawned eight sequels. His work on the original and part IV made them the two best.
An accomplished actor and stuntman as well as make-up artist, Savini has starred in a number of stage productions (portraying such characters as Ben Franklin and Dracula's Renfield through the magic of his make-up and the diversity of his acting skills), performed stunts in several motional pictures, and authored a critically-acclaimed performance as Morgan, the Black Knight, in George Romero's Arthurian epic KNIGHTRIDERS. His most recent performance is as Vargo in John Russo's HEARTSTOPPER.
His portfolio is a ghastly delight, including many interesting an d offbeat photos of his work on screen and behind-the-scenes, and many of these never-before-seen photos are included in GRANDE ILLUSIONS to demonstrate a variety of special make-up effects. (In fact, Savini expressed concern that the printer might run out of red ink while attempting to faithfully reproduce such "ghastly delights!") In ad-dition, he has included a number of step-by-step make-up effects demonstrations, offering budding makeup artists and film fans alike a first-hand look at how illusions are created.
